Evacuation Procedures
Evacuation Guidelines
All employees, contractors, and guests should evacuate the building through the nearest exit if it is safe to do so.
- An evacuation of an Allstate location can be issued by local authorities or the Allstate Facility Management, or because a building fire alarm has been activated.
- Security officers and the Global Security Command Center (GSCC) will help evacuate any facility as needed and instruct personnel to assemble at a safe distance from the building as to not interfere with emergency responders.
General Evacuation Procedures:
- Stay calm – do not run.
- If your phone or valuables are not immediately accessible, do not stop for them.
- Ensure that visitors in your area are aware of the emergency and assist them during the evacuation.
- Conduct an orderly evacuation utilizing your primary exit route. If fire/smoke blocks your exit route, or it is otherwise obstructed, proceed to your secondary exit route.
- During a fire emergency, do not attempt to exit via an elevator.
- If it is safe to do so on your way out of the building, shut off electrical appliances and close all doors, but do not lock them.
- Stay to the right while exiting in hallways or stairwells as Fire Department personnel may be entering the same hallway or stairwell.
- If you cannot leave because all exits are obstructed, crawl or stay low to the floor where there is cleaner and cooler air and get to a phone (preferably in an office with a window). Dial 9-1-1 and let the emergency dispatcher know your exact location.
- Do not run if your clothes catch fire! Running will only fan the fire, causing it to intensify. Drop to the floor and roll back and forth to smother the flames. If possible, use a blanket, coat, or rug to smother the flames.
- If a person falls, or otherwise injures himself/herself during an evacuation, do not attempt to lift him/her as transferring and lifting often requires practice, and you may possibly cause further injury. If possible, dial 9-1-1 and inform the emergency dispatcher of the situation. Do not hang up on the emergency dispatcher until told to do so. If imminent, life-threatening conditions exist in the immediate area occupied by an injured or non-ambulatory person, relocate that individual to the nearest stairwell or to a safe area on the same floor in close proximity to a stairwell, or evacuation route.
- Security Officers must NOT allow re-entry into the building before police and/or fire officials and Allstate Facility Management determine that it is safe to do so. Avoid walking through water or any other hazardous situation.
- Follow all instructions given by police and fire department officials.
Persons Needing Special Assistance
It is a best practice to enable persons needing special assistance to self-identify and maintain a list with security and on-site leadership to provide to first responders as they come onsite.
Assisting employees needing special assistance is the responsibility of first responders who have the equipment to properly assist those that are injured or disabled. Buddies may be identified and assigned to provide assistance if imminent danger is present. In the event of any activity which may require the evacuation of the facility, the identified buddy or alternate should proceed to the location of the person with disabilities, if conditions permit, and assist to the extent possible with the evacuation of the person requiring assistance.
